Dallas rally backs WNBA star Sophie Cunningham’s stance on transgender athletes

Fans filled the plaza outside the American Airlines Center on Tuesday as a rally formed to support Dallas Wings forward Sophie Cunningham. The event, organized by Texas Values and joined by other local groups, centered on Cunningham’s recent comments that transgender women and girls should not be allowed to compete in women’s and girls’ sports.

Local groups voice opposition to non‑biological competitors

“We don’t want non‑biological women entering our sports. They don’t belong there,” said Cindi Castilla of the Texas Eagle Forum, speaking to the crowd. Danielle Buck, representing Patriot Mobile, added, “We believe that women are women and men are men, and we love both, but women should have their own spaces specifically for sports.”

Cunningham, who faced criticism after the remarks, reiterated her position, emphasizing the need to protect young girls who “shouldn’t have to go against biological men.” She has not indicated any intention to retract her statements.

WNBA response and current policy

The WNBA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement limits league participation to women, but it contains no explicit language regarding gender identity or sex assigned at birth. At present, no transgender women are playing in the league. A league spokesperson later said, “There are no immediate eligibility matters affecting the WNBA, and we strongly denounce the bad‑faith efforts to use these topics to demean or marginalize others.”

Community perspectives

Aubrey Campos, director of Education for Texas Latino Pride, questioned why the issue is receiving attention when no transgender women are currently in the WNBA. “If there’s no trans women in sports right now in the WNBA, why are we talking about it? What are we doing?” Campos asked. He suggested the league consider policies that might allow a transgender woman to play under certain conditions, such as therapy duration.

While the rally highlighted support for Cunningham’s viewpoint, other community members expressed concern that the debate could distract from broader inclusion efforts. Nonetheless, the gathering underscored a growing local conversation about how to balance the rights of transgender athletes with the desire of many parents and athletes to preserve gender‑specific competition.

Implications for local sports and families

The discussion resonates beyond professional basketball, touching on youth sports leagues throughout North Texas. Parents of young athletes have voiced a desire for clear guidelines that protect their daughters’ opportunities to compete on a level playing field. As the conversation continues, local schools and recreational programs may face pressure to adopt policies that reflect community values while complying with any future state or league regulations.

For now, the Dallas Wings and the WNBA remain focused on the upcoming game between the Wings and the Indiana Fever, while the broader debate over transgender participation in women’s sports continues to unfold across Texas and the nation.
