Iran Allows Iraqi Oil Tankers to Transit Strait of Hormuz After Baghdad Requests

Iran announced on Saturday that it will permit a number of Iraqi oil tankers to navigate the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The decision follows a series of requests made by the Iraqi government through various diplomatic channels, according to Iran’s state news agency IRNA.

Baghdad’s Push for Export Relief

During a recent visit to Iraq by Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Baghdad highlighted the need for guaranteed passage of its oil shipments. Iraqi President Nizar Amedi confirmed that Iran had facilitated the transit of vessels carrying Iraqi crude in recent days and that discussions about using Hormuz for oil exports are ongoing with Iranian officials.

“The issue remains complicated,” Amedi said at the Baghdad Dialogue policy conference, underscoring the challenges both nations face in maintaining steady oil flows through a waterway that has seen significant disruption since the start of the Iran‑Iraq conflict.

Impact of Hormuz Closures on Iraqi Exports

The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow passage linking the Persian Gulf to the open ocean, has been effectively closed by Iran at various times, dramatically reducing traffic. Shipping volumes remain far below pre‑war levels, and vessels continue to encounter security threats in the region.

Iraq, which produced roughly four million barrels of oil per day before the outbreak of hostilities, has been forced to look for alternative export routes. Prime Minister Ali al‑Zaidi recently announced plans to increase shipments through Turkey’s Ceyhan port, as well as to begin using Syria’s Baniyas port and Jordan’s Aqaba port.

Regional Trade Dynamics

The new permission from Iran is a modest but notable development for Iraq’s energy sector. By securing passage through Hormuz, Iraqi exporters can potentially reduce reliance on longer, costlier routes and improve market access for their crude.

Analysts note that while the allowance does not fully resolve the logistical challenges posed by the ongoing conflict, it signals a willingness by Tehran to cooperate with Baghdad on economic matters, even as broader geopolitical tensions persist.

Looking Ahead

Both governments indicated that further coordination will be necessary to ensure the safe and consistent movement of oil through the strait. Continued dialogue is expected as Iraq expands its export infrastructure and seeks to diversify its shipping options.

For now, the Iranian decision offers a temporary reprieve for Iraqi oil producers, allowing them to navigate a critical chokepoint that has long been a flashpoint in regional trade.
