Downtown Dallas is gearing up for the Republican National Committee’s first‑ever midterm convention, set for Sept. 9‑10 at the American Airlines Center. The two‑day event is expected to bring roughly 20,000 attendees, among them President Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and numerous Republican leaders and activists.
Road closures and security perimeter
Beginning Monday, Sept. 7, the city will close Victory Avenue, North Houston Street, Nowitzki Way, Payne Street and North Field Street. The closures will remain in effect until midnight Friday, Sept. 11. The DART Victory Park station will also be shut for the duration of the convention.
Temporary fencing is already being installed, and federal, state and local law‑enforcement agencies—including the Secret Service, FBI, U.S. Capitol Police and Dallas Police—are coordinating a comprehensive security plan. Checkpoints will be set up on Payne Street east of the arena and at two locations on Victory Place, north and south of the center.

Residents and workers inside the secured perimeter will generally be allowed to reach their homes and jobs, but they should expect delays and possible rolling closures, according to Christina Foley, special agent in charge of the Secret Service Dallas Field Office. Visitors are urged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time and carry identification proving their connection to a destination inside the perimeter. Rideshare drivers and food‑delivery couriers will also face restrictions.
Prohibited items include weapons, ammunition, knives, aerosols, drones, explosives, pepper spray, bicycles, coolers, laser pointers, selfie sticks, signs and banners. Small purses may not exceed 5 × 7 × 1 inches; clear bags are permitted up to 12 × 6 × 12 inches.
A no‑fly zone will be enforced for manned aircraft and drones during the convention. Law‑enforcement officials have also prepared for peaceful demonstrations, designating Pike Park as the nearest public gathering spot and noting a “We the People” rally planned at City Hall on Sept. 10.
Cost and program highlights
The City of Dallas estimates police security costs at about $1.8 million, with the RNC indicating it will help cover the expense. The convention’s first night will focus on tax cuts, health‑care affordability, border security, trade and domestic manufacturing. Vice President Vance will deliver the keynote address, and President Trump is expected to appear. The second night will spotlight families affected by Republican tax policies and Social Security, and will include a tribute to conservative activist Charlie Kirk, with President Trump slated to keynote the evening.
