Dallas Park Board Faces $13M Budget Cut

The Dallas Park and Recreation Department is grappling with a proposed $13 million budget cut, which has been the focal point of park board members in recent weeks. The department faces a significant reduction in funding, nearly three times the amount cut over the prior three fiscal years combined.

Proposed Cuts and Community Impact

City staff have proposed service-level cuts, including the closure of four community centers, reduction of park maintenance cycles, restructuring of summer camps and afterschool programming, and elimination of 20 vacant positions. However, park board members have pushed back on cuts affecting underserved communities, such as the closure of community centers, and have urged staff to explore alternative options before reducing community services.

Last week, staff presented new priorities for meeting the budget deficit, including reducing stipends to partners like the Dallas Zoo and Dallas Arboretum. Nevertheless, some board members remain unconvinced by the proposed priorities, suggesting that security contracts with the Dallas Police Department and investments in golf courses should be reconsidered.

The Dallas City Council’s next budget workshop is scheduled for June 17, where the park board’s concerns and proposed solutions will be addressed.
