Dallas Eagle Scout builds shaded ride‑share station for seniors at Juliette Fowler Communities

Dallas‑area youth are making a tangible difference for seniors. Fourteen‑year‑old Charlie McGinnis, a freshman at St. Mark’s School of Texas and a Boy Scout since fifth grade, completed his Eagle Scout project at the Juliette Fowler Communities senior living facility. The project created a designated shared‑ride station with a roof and bench, giving residents a safe, shaded place to wait for drivers on the expansive campus.

Project inspiration and design

Charlie chose Juliette Fowler Communities after helping his older brother, James, complete an Eagle Scout project there in 2024. James built a pergola with a table and chairs, providing a communal gathering spot. When the facility’s staff explained that drivers often struggled to locate residents on the large property, they asked for a solution. The scouts proposed a shaded station that would serve both as a pickup point and a comfortable waiting area.

Working with his grandfather, Charlie researched various designs and kits before settling on a simple yet sturdy structure. He recruited fellow scouts from Troop 82 and enlisted family members to assist with construction. “The hardest part was the planning and design,” Charlie said. “You want to get it right before you get there. What excited me the most was leading a team. I haven’t completed such a large project before, and it’s exciting to see the payoff. I also love meeting the residents.”

Construction over Labor Day weekend

Over Labor Day weekend, the scouts gathered at the senior community to bring the plan to life. They erected a roofed frame and installed a bench, creating a functional shelter for residents awaiting shared‑ride drivers. The team plans to return later to paint the station, ensuring it remains welcoming and weather‑resistant.

Residents expressed gratitude for the new amenity. “Even if we aren’t waiting for a ride, we can come sit in the shade and watch games at the park,” said Paul Provost, a resident. “We have enjoyed watching the scouts build this and look forward to using it.”

Impact on the community

The project exemplifies the spirit of service that the Boy Scouts of America encourages, especially among young people who seek to support their neighbors. By addressing a practical need—helping drivers locate seniors safely—the scouts not only improved daily logistics but also fostered intergenerational connections.

Juliette Fowler Communities’ staff praised the effort, noting that the shaded station will reduce missed pickups and enhance the overall safety of residents who rely on shared‑ride transportation. The initiative also highlights how local youth can partner with senior living facilities to create lasting, community‑focused improvements.

Looking ahead

Charlie’s successful Eagle Scout project sets a precedent for future youth‑led service endeavors in Dallas. The scouts hope the station will inspire other organizations to consider similar collaborations that benefit both seniors and the broader community.

As the scouts prepare to paint the structure, they remain committed to maintaining the station and exploring additional ways to support older adults in the area. Their dedication underscores the value of volunteerism and the positive impact that young leaders can have when they apply their skills to real‑world challenges.
