A recent outbreak of cyclosporiasis has resulted in two deaths in Michigan, according to health officials. The outbreak, which has affected multiple states, has led to a total of 11,234 cases in Michigan, with 193 hospitalizations.

Cyclosporiasis Outbreak

Cyclosporiasis is caused by a microscopic parasite that can contaminate fresh food or water, leading to severe diarrhea in those infected. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified over 18,000 cases of domestic cyclosporiasis this season, with 6,707 confirmed cases and approximately 11,500 others undergoing further laboratory testing.

The CDC, in collaboration with the US Food and Drug Administration and state partners, is investigating multiple clusters of cyclosporiasis cases, including a large multistate outbreak centered in the Midwest. Iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms has been recalled due to potential contamination.
