Cyclosporiasis linked to iceberg lettuce: safety steps for families

Health officials continue to monitor a cyclosporiasis outbreak that has been traced to iceberg lettuce processed at a Taylor Farms facility in central Mexico. The outbreak has resulted in thousands of illnesses across the United States and has been linked to two fatalities.

Why the outbreak matters for local families

Although the recalled lettuce products are now past their best‑by dates and should no longer be on store shelves, the incident underscores the importance of safe food‑handling practices at home. Consumer Reports notes that there is no evidence requiring shoppers to avoid lettuce or other salad greens altogether.

Expert guidance on handling produce

James Rogers, a food‑safety specialist with Consumer Reports, explains that produce is sourced internationally and moves through large distribution networks. “If one batch becomes contaminated during processing, it can affect a larger mix before it reaches store shelves,” he said.

Rogers recommends the following steps to reduce the risk of infection:

  • Wash hands thoroughly before and after handling fresh produce.
  • Rinse lettuce and other greens under cold, running water. While washing cannot remove the parasite completely, it can lower the number of organisms.
  • Clean cutting boards, knives and other surfaces with hot, soapy water after use.

Cooking as a safeguard

When produce can be cooked, heating it to at least 158°F (70°C) is the most effective way to kill Cyclospora and other food‑borne bacteria. This applies to vegetables that are often eaten raw, such as melons and cucumbers; peeling or scrubbing firmer items before slicing also helps keep external contaminants from transferring to the edible portion.

What retailers are doing

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirms that the recalled lettuce products have been removed from the market. Retailers are advised to check inventory for the specific lot numbers identified in the CDC notice and to pull any remaining items from shelves.

Practical tips for everyday meals

Families can continue to enjoy salads by following these simple practices:

  • Separate raw produce from raw meat, poultry or seafood in the refrigerator.
  • Use a clean colander or salad spinner to rinse greens, allowing water to flow over them.
  • Consider using a produce brush for firmer items like cucumbers, carrots or melons.
  • If you are uncertain about the source of a product, choose locally grown greens when available, as they often have shorter supply chains.

By incorporating these habits, households can protect themselves from cyclosporiasis while still benefiting from the nutritional value of fresh vegetables.
