Beattie Family Celebrates Nearly 50 Years of Watermelon Tradition at Iowa State Fair

For nearly half a century, the Beattie family has been a staple of the Iowa State Fair, offering fresh watermelons at a stand located near the iconic Giant Slide. Founded by the original Beattie couple, the Melon Patch has remained a family‑run operation, now overseen by their grandchildren, who continue to uphold the tradition of handing out hundreds of watermelons each year.

“It feels good being a part of something that your family runs and just being there for your grandparents and watching it trickle down through the family as you get older,” said Karson Vander Weerdt, one of the Beattie grandchildren. “We love seeing the smiles on visitors’ faces and keeping the tradition alive for future generations.”

Long‑time employee Ella Bruchert, who has worked at the stand for seven years, echoed the sentiment. “I’ve worked for seven years, and I just keep coming back. It’s one of the most exciting times of the year. I love getting to meet new people and keep the traditions going,” she said.

The Melon Patch’s longevity reflects the broader role that family‑owned vendors play in shaping the fair’s atmosphere. While the fair has introduced new attractions and modernized many aspects of its programming, the presence of multigenerational stands like the Beattie Melon Patch provides a tangible link to the fair’s agricultural roots and the community values of hard work, hospitality, and family.

Visitors to the stand can watch staff toss and haul watermelons, a spectacle that has become a beloved part of the fair experience. The stand’s location near the Giant Slide ensures high foot traffic, allowing families and fairgoers of all ages to stop by for a slice of fresh fruit and a moment of nostalgia.

Family Tradition and Community Impact

The Beattie family’s commitment to the fair goes beyond selling fruit. Their presence supports local agriculture by sourcing watermelons from regional growers, reinforcing the fair’s mission to showcase Iowa’s farming heritage. The stand also serves as a gathering point where families can share stories, create memories, and experience the simple pleasure of a cold slice of watermelon on a summer day.

As the fair moves forward, the Beattie grandchildren remain focused on preserving the core values that have defined the stand since its inception. “We want to make sure that future generations understand the importance of family, hard work, and community,” Karson added.

How to Experience the Melon Patch

Fair attendees can find the Beattie Melon Patch near the Giant Slide throughout the fair’s operating days. In addition to the fresh fruit, the stand offers a glimpse into the family’s history through photographs and memorabilia displayed on site.

For those unable to attend in person, KCCI 8 News provides live coverage from the MidAmerican Energy Stage at 4:30 p.m. each weekday during the fair. The coverage can also be streamed for free via the Very Local app.

Whether you’re a longtime Iowa resident or a first‑time visitor, the Beattie Melon Patch stands as a reminder that the Iowa State Fair remains a celebration of community, family, and the agricultural traditions that define the state.
