A design writer and collector, Dung Ngo, has amassed over 10,000 pieces of cutlery, sparking an obsession that led to a new book, “Knife Fork Spoon: Modernist Cutlery 1900–2025,” and an accompanying exhibition at the Denver Art Museum.
Modern Cutlery Design
Ngo’s research highlights the structural problems in modern cutlery production, which has barely changed in 150 years, and the disappearing craft behind it. He commissioned 11 international artists to reimagine cutlery using 3D printing, resulting in unique and culturally relevant designs.
The exhibition, Knife, Fork, Spoon 3.0, features these designs, including a set that appears to bloom, created by Polish botanical designer Marcin Rusak. Ngo believes that 3D printing will revolutionize cutlery design, making it more accessible and personalized, especially for children and people with limited hand dexterity.
