In today’s era of polarization and instant information, it’s easy to get caught up in hyperbole and misinformation. However, Connecticut State Senator Saud Anwar reminds us that our nation has faced similar challenges before and has always come out stronger.
Working Across the Aisle
As one of 36 state senators, Senator Anwar has seen firsthand the importance of working together to achieve common goals. He points to the state budget as an example, which delivered hundreds of millions of dollars to towns and cities statewide to support educational and municipal budgets. This was made possible by the support of both Democrats and Republicans, with six of 11 Senate Republicans and 27 of 49 House Republicans joining all Democrats in support.
Another example of bipartisan cooperation is Senate Bill 4, which provides better protections for Connecticut residents, including allowing consumers to have their personal data deleted and disclosure when consumer data is used to set prices of goods and services. This bill drew support from seven Senate Republicans and all but six House Republicans.
Senator Anwar also highlights Senate Bill 5, which seeks to place additional protections on artificial intelligence, a technology with as many concerns as advantages. The bill requires companies providing AI “companion” services to include a protocol to identify potential self-harm from users and provide information on mental health services if needed. This bill won yes votes from all but 17 House Republicans and four Senate Republicans.
Putting the Greater Good First
Senator Anwar emphasizes that elected officials have a responsibility to put the needs of their constituents first, even if it means working across party lines. He believes that by doing what’s right and what’s best for their communities, lawmakers can build trust and achieve great things.
