Nickel mining operations in Indonesia’s Raja Ampat are continuing despite protests and environmental concerns. According to a report by Greenpeace, three nickel mining licenses are being processed in the area, which is a UNESCO-listed Global Geopark.
Environmental Concerns
The report found that the mining operations pose a significant threat to the region’s environment, including the planet’s most important marine biodiversity hotspots. Protests erupted last year against mining in Raja Ampat, with social media users sharing a graphic of the area’s blue waters with the hashtag #SaveRajaAmpat.
The Indonesian government revoked business permits for four mining firms in response to the protests, but the companies whose licenses are currently being processed were not among those affected. One of the companies, PT Gag Nikel, resumed operations in September 2025 despite an environmental audit that found environmental risks.
