CT Senate Primary

A state Senate primary in Connecticut could bring significant changes to the state’s K-12 education system. Democratic Sen. Douglas McCrory, the Senate co-chair of the Education Committee, is facing a three-way primary next month. His challengers, Rep. Maryam Khan and Ayana Taylor, are also deeply involved in education.

Education Priorities

McCrory’s top education priority is ensuring all children have access to a quality education, regardless of where they live. He proposes addressing how Connecticut funds its schools, which relies heavily on local property wealth. McCrory wants to ‘level the playing field’ by putting state resources into under-resourced areas.

McCrory also supports school choice programming, which allows students to attend charter or magnet schools. He believes this gives kids from under-resourced communities the opportunity to study with kids from more affluent communities, leading to better outcomes.

Segregation and Education

McCrory acknowledges that Connecticut is one of the most economically and racially segregated states in the U.S. He believes that segregation is a major issue in education, leading to unequal outcomes for students. McCrory proposes addressing this by integrating schools and providing more resources to under-resourced districts.

McCrory’s ideas include boosting salaries for teachers in under-resourced districts, creating more opportunities for field trips and activities outside the typical school day, and expanding access to charter and magnet schools. He also suggests collaboration between school districts to build capacity and provide special education services.
