A cryptocurrency trading website called Pump.fun is offering bounties for people to get tattoos of ads on themselves. The website, which specializes in the creation and exchange of memecoins, announced a new feature called Pump.fun GO, where users can offer public bounties for people to complete various tasks.
Exploitative Marketplace
One user, Ayush, offered a bounty of $3,000 for someone to get a tattoo of the word “bountywork” on their forehead. Arivu, a man from India, took up the offer and got the tattoo, but Ayush refused to pay him because the word was misspelled as “boutywork”. The incident has raised concerns about the exploitative nature of the platform.
According to Nicholas Vrousalis, a philosophy professor at Erasmus University, the platform’s bounty system is a clear case of exploitation, where people are being instrumentalized and dehumanized for the sake of personal profit. William Cavanaugh, a theologian and professor of Catholic studies at DePaul University, also criticized the platform, saying that it transforms human relationships into marketplace transactions.
The incident has also sparked a debate about the ethics of cryptocurrency trading and the use of bounty systems. While some argue that the platform provides an opportunity for people to earn money, others see it as a form of exploitation.
