Cowboys and Saints practice in Oxnard erupts into brawl with helmets tossed

Dallas and New Orleans met for a combined summer practice on Tuesday in Oxnard, California, a routine part of NFL training camps designed to give veterans a chance to test themselves against opposing starters. The heat and competitive pressure turned the session into a volatile environment, and the two squads ended up in a full‑scale brawl.

What sparked the fight

According to video captured by the Dallas Morning News, the first signs of trouble began when Cowboys linebacker Donovan Ezeiruaku threw a punch that officials quickly saw. Shortly after, Cowboys cornerback Caelen Carson also threw a punch, and the confrontation escalated.

Saints tight end Brock Rechsteiner, the son of WWE Hall of Famer Scott Steiner, grabbed Cowboys safety Jalen Thompson and executed a suplex‑style wrestling move. The move, while impressive, added to the chaos as helmets were tossed across the field. Saints center Erik McCoy launched a Cowboys helmet into the air, and Ezeiruaku responded by snatching the same helmet, swinging it off the Saints player’s head and sending it flying.

Coaches react

Both coaching staffs expressed disappointment. Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who was quoted after the incident, said, “Right now, I’m in charge of fight club,” before adding that nobody wants the fighting and that the practice was “unfortunate” and “disappointed” because the team did not get the work it needed.

Saints linebacker Pete Werner echoed the sentiment, noting, “You don’t want punches thrown or anything like that… but you want your guys protecting each other. There’s a part of it that’s good, another part where it’s, ‘Let’s be smart here. Let’s get this moving.'”

Why joint practices matter

Joint practices have become a common substitute for preseason games for veteran players. By scrimmaging against the opposing team’s starters, players can hone skills in a controlled environment before the official preseason matchups. The NFL typically schedules these sessions to reduce injury risk while still providing a competitive setting.

In this case, the Oxnard practice was meant to be that controlled environment, but the extreme heat and competitive tension turned it into a “petri dish of frustration,” as one observer described. The coaches emphasized that such conduct is not acceptable and that future joint sessions will focus on professionalism.

Looking ahead

The Cowboys and Saints will not hold a second joint practice on Wednesday. The Saints travel to the Los Angeles area on Thursday for a joint session with the Rams, while the Cowboys will resume their own camp activities in Dallas.

Both teams hope to move past the incident and return to the primary goal of these practices: improving technique, building chemistry, and preparing for the upcoming season.
