Covington Hockey League Supports Local Mother

The Covington Street Hockey League recently organized a benefit game to support Devona Bonta, a local mother battling stage 4 breast cancer and mourning the sudden loss of her son.

A Community Comes Together

Members of the league rallied around Bonta, a familiar face within their community, as she faces a difficult fight. "We love to help in any way we can with the community in general. We try to make that a goal of ours," said Tyler Vaske of the Covington Street Hockey League.

Athlete Nick Okada shared that he is familiar with this type of devastating news, having been close to Bonta’s 29-year-old son, Johnny, who unexpectedly died last year from complications related to seizures. "I was very close to Johnny, so that hit me hard when it happened. Seeing this news with Devona, I can't imagine what they're going through," Okada said.

The team organized a community fundraiser to bring people together to celebrate Johnny’s life and to support his mother, who continues to fight with all her might. "Keep up the good fight. I hope everything we do here today helps the best it can. We have you in our thoughts and prayers. We love you, and you got this," Vaske said.
