Cory Booker is a US senator from New Jersey and former 2020 Democratic presidential candidate. He was born on April 27, 1969, in Washington, DC, to Cary and Carolyn Booker, both IBM executives.
Early Life and Education
Booker received a football scholarship to attend Stanford University, where he earned a B.A. in 1991 and an M.A. in 1992. He then attended the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, earning an Honors Degree in 1994, and later earned his J.D. from Yale Law School in 1997.
Booker is a Baptist and has been a vegetarian since 1992, becoming a vegan in 2014. He lived in a public housing complex in Newark called Brick Towers for eight years.
Political Career
Booker was elected mayor of Newark in 2006 and served until 2013. During his tenure, he developed a reputation for engaging in personal acts of heroism, such as rescuing a neighbor from a house fire and chasing down a suspected bank robber.
In 2013, Booker was sworn in to the US Senate after winning a special election. He has since been reelected and has introduced several bills, including the Marijuana Justice Act, which aims to remove marijuana from the federal list of controlled substances.
Booker has also been a vocal advocate for social justice and has spoken out on issues such as racial inequality and economic inequality. In 2020, he endorsed Joe Biden for president and was reelected to the Senate.
