House Republicans Advance $95 Billion Iran War Package

House Republicans on the Budget Committee have advanced a $95 billion package for the Iran war, farm aid, and President Donald Trump’s push for strict new voter ID requirements. The package, which includes $60 billion for the Iran war, $13 billion for Intelligence, $12 billion for Agriculture, and $10 billion for Administration, was approved on a party-line vote of 20-14.

Republican Priorities

Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington framed the proposal as one last push to deliver for voters ahead of the midterm elections. “We are rallying to finish what we started when the American people sent us here,” said Arrington. The package is the third budget reconciliation package Republicans have put forward this session to advance Trump’s priorities past Democratic objections.

Speaker Mike Johnson is pushing the effort almost single-handedly, without full backing from his slim House Republican majority or the Senate. Democrats argue that the package is a failed attempt to advance Trump’s agenda and that Americans are paying for his plans. Rep. Brendan Boyle, the ranking Democrat on the Budget Committee, said the document never once mentions the issue of affordability, which is top of mind for many Americans.

Next Steps

The package now moves to the full House for consideration, where it faces an uncertain future. The Senate has also expressed concerns about the package, with Republican senators questioning the cost and the process. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said senators have “a lot of questions” about the package and that it’s a “very uneven path” forward.
