Convicted Murderer Faces New Charges

Demaurion Moore, one of the two men convicted of murdering 16-year-old Tyree Smith at a JCPS bus stop in 2021, is facing new drug charges. Moore and Mekhi Cable, both 20, were found guilty of the crime, with prosecutors stating that the pair were targeting another teenage boy as part of an ongoing feud and Smith was caught in the crossfire.

New Charges

Moore is accused of stashing Suboxone strips in his jail cell, which are used to treat opioid disorder. Court records show that officers found 40 strips hidden under a sheet in his cell, with the discovery coming the day after the two men were convicted. The new charges against Moore include promoting contraband, attempted possession of a controlled substance, and trafficking in a controlled substance.

Moore is scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday at 9 a.m. He had previously accepted the state’s recommended sentence of 35 years, agreeing to waive his right to appeal or ask for shock probation. Cable, on the other hand, rejected the offer and the jury recommended 60 years. Both will be formally sentenced in August.
