Consumers increasingly scrutinize supplement labels for safety and transparency

Recent data indicate that Americans are paying closer attention to what they ingest. A March 2026 International Food Information Council survey found that 79% of respondents examine supplement labels at least sometimes when shopping.

Why label scrutiny matters

Shoppers say clear labeling builds trust. When a label is confusing or appears to hide information, consumers often look elsewhere. Brands can earn confidence by disclosing ingredient sources and showing that an independent lab has verified the product.

Industry response

Companies in sports nutrition and wellness, such as NutraBio, note that easy access to health information has weakened the old assumption that a product on a store shelf has passed rigorous checks. Social‑media dietitians and fitness creators now break down labels publicly, reinforcing the trend.

Wendy Reinhardt Kapsak, president of the International Food Information Council, said Americans are actively engaging with label information, which explains the demand for more than just a clean front‑pack phrase.

What experts advise

Dr. Dinar Sayani, an internal‑medicine physician, advises shoppers to start with the fact panel, which lists every ingredient. He warns against labels that claim to “cure” or “prevent” disease, noting that U.S. law prohibits such claims for dietary supplements.

The “other ingredients” line, often beneath the active nutrients, can hide binders and fillers. Healthline’s guide flags this section as a place to watch for unnecessary additives. The same guide highlights allergen statements that must disclose major triggers like milk, soy, or wheat, and certification seals indicating third‑party review.

Regulatory landscape

Supplements can reach shelves without FDA pre‑market approval; the agency steps in only after a product is on the market. Former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb emphasized that supplements must contain only the ingredients they claim.

Third‑party certification typically checks identity (the ingredient is truly present), purity (absence of heavy metals, bacteria, etc.), and potency (dose matches the label). A seal or certificate signals that an outside group has verified these aspects, though it does not answer every question.

Supply‑chain transparency

Brands that trace raw ingredients back to the farm can flag a bad harvest before it reaches consumers. The National Strength and Conditioning Association notes that raw‑ingredient certification adds another layer of identity and purity testing.

Consumer expectations

Survey data from the Food Industry Association show that 76% of shoppers consider ingredient and manufacturing transparency important, up from 69% in 2018. Steve Markenson of the FMI linked this demand to brand loyalty, noting that consumers are more likely to stay with brands that make information easy to find.

More than 80% of shoppers say they would use QR codes, websites, or apps to access additional product details, whether buying online or in‑store, according to FMI research.

Looking ahead

Regulatory managers, such as Michelle Anstey of the National Sanitation Foundation, expect new rules to push the industry toward even greater label clarity. As evidence becomes a standard part of the buying process, supplement companies that share detailed information stand to gain consumer trust.
