Consumer Reports Warns of Exploding Oven Doors Across the Nation

Imagine waking up to a loud crash in your kitchen, only to find shattered glass from your oven door scattered across the floor. This alarming scenario has been reported by hundreds of consumers across the nation, according to a recent investigation by Consumer Reports. The investigation reviewed complaints filed with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) over a 15-month period, revealing nearly 400 incidents and over 40 injuries related to oven door glass shattering unexpectedly.

Unexpected Risks in the Kitchen

Many consumers described the sound as a small explosion, while others discovered the shattered glass after hearing a crash from another room. Surprisingly, some reported that the oven was cold to the touch when the glass shattered. This issue is not limited to a single manufacturer, as complaints have been filed against multiple companies over the years.

Consumer Reports reached out to the five manufacturers with the most complaints. LG acknowledged the complaints but stated that no additional action was warranted at this time. Other companies assured that their products meet third-party safety standards. Notably, Samsung was the only manufacturer to offer free repairs regardless of warranty status.

Call for Action

Consumer Reports is urging manufacturers to collaborate with the CPSC to investigate these incidents and provide free repairs to affected consumers. Experts from Consumer Reports advise that there may not be obvious warning signs before the glass fails, but any chip, crack, or visible damage should be taken seriously and reported to the manufacturer immediately.

If you experience a shattered oven door, Consumer Reports recommends taking photos, keeping repair records, contacting the manufacturer, and filing a report with the CPSC at saferproducts.gov. These steps can help regulators determine if further action is necessary to ensure consumer safety.
