In Toledo, Ohio, a simple meal has become a beacon of hope and community spirit. Burrito Blessings 419, an initiative that began three years ago at Grace Lutheran Church in West Toledo, has grown from a small gathering to a community-wide movement. Originally serving about 10 people with the help of 10 volunteers, the initiative now reaches hundreds across the city.
Community Effort Expands
Every last Saturday of July, volunteers gather to prepare and distribute burritos to those in need. The operation has expanded to a second location at the corner of Cherry and Erie streets downtown, where more than 200 burritos are served. Brenda Facey, a dedicated volunteer, emphasizes the group’s mission: “If they say they’ve got a neighbor or family at home, we say just take as many as you need.”
The initiative’s impact is not limited to food distribution. Local barbers and hairstylists have joined the effort, offering their services to those in need. A volunteer even provides a $25 gift card each month, waiting for the right moment to hand it to someone deserving. Founder Stacy Willis shares, “It gives me goosebumps thinking about it.”
Beyond Food: Building Community
As the initiative grew, so did the number of volunteers, now nearly five times the original group. Sustainable clothing has been added to the services offered, further supporting the community. Gretchen Hiatt, a volunteer from Grace Lutheran Church, notes the diversity of the volunteers: “We see different age groups come help and people from the outside, so it’s a really neat thing.”
Donations from the church and the surrounding community are crucial to sustaining Burrito Blessings 419. However, the most significant offering is not tangible. Willis explains, “We’ve gotten to know a lot of the people coming to get burritos, so we feed them, but we’re also providing care, companionship, and support.”
