Consumer Reports Finds Banned Baby Items on Major Secondhand Sites

Parents looking to stretch a budget by buying used baby gear should be aware of a recent Consumer Reports investigation that uncovered dangerous, even banned, items on the nation’s biggest online marketplaces. The nonprofit tested listings on Facebook Marketplace, eBay, Craigslist and Mercari and found multiple prohibited products still for sale.

What was found

Among the items flagged were drop‑side cribs, padded crib bumpers, infant inclined sleepers and in‑bed sleepers. The latter have been linked to suffocation and asphyxiation risks and are expressly prohibited for infant sleep. Consumer Reports stopped counting after identifying 50 in‑bed sleepers in just 65 search results, underscoring how prevalent the problem is.

Legal backdrop

Federal law makes it illegal to sell recalled products, even on secondhand platforms. Yet many sellers and buyers may not realize a product has been recalled or may be unaware of the law’s reach. The investigation suggests a gap between policy and practice that puts families at risk.

Platform responses

Meta, the parent company of Facebook Marketplace, told Consumer Reports that recalled products are prohibited by its policies and that enforcement relies on both automated detection tools and human review. No comment was provided by eBay, Craigslist or Mercari at the time of publication.

Safety advice for parents

Consumer Reports urges shoppers to verify any used baby item before purchase. The safest approach is to search the exact product name or model number on recalls.gov to confirm whether a recall or safety alert exists. Sellers should also double‑check that an item has not been recalled before posting it online.

Special caution is recommended for used child car seats. Even if a seat appears pristine, hidden damage, missing parts, expired labels or prior crash involvement can render it unsafe. Most child‑car‑seat experts advise buying a new seat whenever possible.

Why it matters for families

Secondhand marketplaces offer convenience and cost savings, but they also require vigilance. When families prioritize safety over price, they protect their unborn children and preserve the strong family foundations that keep neighborhoods thriving.

By staying informed and using the tools available, parents can enjoy the financial benefits of resale while avoiding products that jeopardize their children’s well‑being.
