Connecticut to pilot text alerts for sewage spills in rivers and streams

Heavy rain can cause untreated sewage to flow into Connecticut’s rivers and streams, creating unsafe conditions for swimming, fishing and boating for up to two days. While residents have been able to check a state performance dashboard or follow the CT Sewage Spills account on X, those methods often fail to reach people quickly.

State agency launches pilot alert program

In response, the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) announced a pilot program that will send real‑time alerts via text message or email whenever a sewage spill is reported. The agency said the current notification system “isn’t perfect,” and the new service aims to give residents push notifications directly to their phones.

Municipalities and sewer utilities will continue to submit spill reports to DEEP as they do today. Those reports will be fed into the new public‑facing alert platform, where subscribers can choose which towns’ alerts they want to receive. The pilot is slated to begin in the fall, with full public availability expected by the end of the year.

How residents can stay informed

Until the new system is live, residents can still access spill information on DEEP’s performance dashboard, which allows users to filter by location, date and affected water bodies. The CT Sewage Spills X account also posts updates, though many posts receive fewer than 100 views, limiting their reach.

Once operational, the alert service will cost the state about $150,000 annually, according to DEEP. The agency hopes the investment will improve public safety and protect families who rely on clean waterways for recreation and livelihood.

Community impact

Local families, anglers and boaters have expressed concern about the health risks posed by untreated sewage. By providing timely notifications, the state aims to give parents and community members the information they need to avoid contaminated water and protect public health.

DEEP officials emphasized that the pilot will be evaluated for effectiveness before any broader rollout. They also invited public feedback on the service’s design and functionality.

The initiative reflects a growing trend among states to use modern communication tools for environmental emergencies, ensuring that citizens receive accurate, actionable information when it matters most.
