Gov. Ned Lamont, who is seeking a historic third term, was in Norwich, Connecticut, on Monday, touring a new school under construction. The stop was meant to showcase a campaign priority of his re-election campaign: education funding. Lamont is facing a primary battle from Rep. Josh Elliott, who hopes Democratic voters will want a gubernatorial nominee who will push more progressive ideas.
Primary Battle
Lamont is the first incumbent governor to face a primary in 48 years. A victory will move him closer to winning a historic third term. If Lamont serves 12 years in office, he’d be the longest-serving governor since Jonathan Trumbull. He’s touting his nearly eight years in office, including raising the minimum wage and pushing for an income tax cut.
Elliott wants to raise taxes on the wealthy to use the money for municipal aid and other priorities. University of Hartford professor Bilal Sekou said the main focus of the race is Lamont’s experience versus a call by his challenger for a new generation. Other notable primaries include the 1st Congressional District, where Rep. John Larson is the first incumbent member of Congress to face a primary in state history.
