Connecticut Coalition Empowers Local Groups to Tackle Housing Shortage

A new initiative in Connecticut, the Housing for All Network, is taking a grassroots approach to address the state’s housing shortage by focusing on local policy changes. This coalition, led by the Housing Collective and the Connecticut for All Justice Fund, aims to empower residents in suburban and rural areas to advocate for increased and preserved housing supplies.

Empowering Local Communities

Margaret LeFever, program director for Housing for All, emphasized the importance of local residents taking charge of housing initiatives. The network provides training, technical support, and small grants to over 40 participating groups across the state, allowing them to expand their impact.

Norma Martinez-HoSang, director of Connecticut For All, highlighted the role of the Justice Fund in supporting these efforts, particularly in New Haven, Middlesex, and Hartford Counties. The goal is to create a statewide view and strengthen local groups through training and capacity-building.

Addressing Suburban and Rural Needs

The initiative focuses on suburban and rural areas, where there has been historical resistance to rental housing. These areas often rely on urban centers to bear the brunt of affordable housing responsibilities. The coalition seeks to change this dynamic by encouraging local solutions.

In eastern Connecticut, the Coalition on Diversity and Equity (CoDE) is actively participating in this initiative. CoDE, which formed in Hebron, aims to educate residents about creating diverse and equitable communities. They recently participated in a training session on local organizing through the Housing for All initiative.

Regional Collaboration

Another group, Neighbors for Housing Southern Connecticut, operates in several towns including New Haven and Branford. They focus on supporting zoning changes and other initiatives to facilitate housing development. Miles Lasater, a leader of the group, emphasizes the regional nature of housing issues.

In Stratford, the Homelessness Task Force received a small grant to participate in a summer festival, furthering their efforts to raise awareness about housing options.

Overall, the Housing for All Network is fostering collaboration among local groups to tackle Connecticut’s housing crisis, ensuring that communities have the resources and support they need to expand housing options.
