Confrontation at California Track Meet Involving Trans Athlete Draws Police Attention

A press conference organized by local LGBTQ advocacy groups in Clovis, California, turned contentious as ‘Save Girls Sports’ activists clashed with supporters of a transgender athlete competing in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) state championship. The event, which took place outside the championship venue, saw multiple police officers called to monitor the situation.

Press Conference and Protest

The press conference was held by Pride at the Pier and Rainbow Families Action to support AB Hernandez, a transgender athlete competing in three girls’ jumping events. Hernandez’s mother, Nereyda Hernandez, and other LGBTQ activists spoke in favor of the athlete’s participation. However, the gathering was interrupted by ‘Save Girls Sports’ activists, leading to a heated verbal confrontation.

Clovis Police Department vehicles were already present, and officers stepped in to oversee the situation as tensions escalated. Despite the intensity of the exchange, the confrontation eventually dispersed without direct police intervention. The police department later declined to comment on the incident.

Voices from Both Sides

Beth Bourne, a prominent ‘Save Girls Sports’ activist, led the counterprotest and expressed her concerns to Fox News Digital. She argued that allowing transgender athletes like Hernandez to compete in girls’ sports is unfair both to the female athletes and to Hernandez, whom she believes is being misled about biological realities.

In contrast, pro-LGBTQ activist Daisy Gardner addressed Bourne’s stance, expressing hope that Bourne could learn and grow from the experience, emphasizing the importance of education and understanding.

Ongoing Controversy

This year’s CIF state finals have been marked by controversy surrounding Hernandez’s participation, mirroring similar tensions from the previous year when protests also erupted. Last year, a pro-transgender activist was arrested for allegedly assaulting a ‘Save Girls Sports’ activist with a trans pride flag.

The ongoing debate highlights the broader national conversation about transgender athletes’ participation in sports, with strong opinions on both sides regarding fairness, inclusion, and the impact on traditional gender categories in athletics.
