The city of Longview, Washington, witnessed an extraordinary display of community spirit as thousands gathered for a barbecue fundraiser to support local families. The event, held in the parking lot of Bob’s Sporting Goods, was organized in response to a recent tragedy affecting one of the city’s major employers.
Community Comes Together
Organizer Adam Scattergood, inspired by the need to bring people together during a difficult time, quickly mobilized resources with the help of local businesses and volunteers. ‘I need to cook,’ Scattergood recalled telling his wife, as he set out to create a space for healing and unity.
With pitmasters from across Southwest Washington contributing their skills and resources, the event turned into what many believe to be Longview’s largest barbecue. By Saturday afternoon, thousands of pounds of food had been prepared and served to a crowd that wrapped around the property.
A Show of Solidarity
Residents from across Cowlitz County attended not only to donate or enjoy the food but to connect with their neighbors. Chris Corekin, a Longview resident, emphasized the importance of community gatherings, saying, ‘This community needs the camaraderie of everybody coming together.’
Nick Anderson, a local pastor and former principal, noted that the event was a testament to Longview’s character. ‘It’s been a real downer with just what has gone on,’ Anderson said. ‘But you see the turnout today — it’s a total turnaround from that.’
More Than Just a Meal
While the barbecue was not intended to solve all problems, Scattergood hoped it would provide a sense of togetherness. ‘This is not going to fix everything. This is not going to heal all of our wounds,’ he said. ‘But what this has done, it’s created a place where we can come as Cowlitz County residents and all be together.’
