Community Hospital North Holds 12th Annual NICU Reunion in Indianapolis

Indianapolis – On Saturday, Community Hospital North welcomed former Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) patients, their families, and hospital staff to Conner Prairie for the 12th annual NICU reunion. The animal‑themed event, titled “Wild About Our NICU Graduates,” brought together hundreds of children and parents who once relied on the hospital’s specialized infant care.

Families Celebrate Recovery and Faith

Attendees enjoyed games, activities and food while reconnecting with the doctors, nurses and respiratory therapists who cared for them during critical hospital stays. One mother said, “We wanted to come to celebrate that he made it through. It was a really stressful time when he was in the NICU, and being here is just a great memory of what we went through.” Another parent added, “For him to make it out of ICU and to advance to where he’s at now, it’s straight‑up a blessing from God.”

Staff Find Meaning in Seeing Graduates Thrive

Hospital caregivers emphasized how rewarding it is to watch former patients grow healthy and active. Jamie Phillippe, Vice President and Chief Nurse Executive, noted, “The reunion is a reminder that while a NICU stay may be only part of a family’s story, the relationships formed during that time often last for years.” A caregiver on the floor echoed that sentiment, saying, “We take care of them at their sickest times, we want to see them at their best of times as well.”

Community Hospital North’s Role in Indiana’s Maternity Care

Community Hospital North operates one of the state’s busiest maternity programs, delivering 4,561 babies and caring for 1,080 newborns in 2025. The hospital has held the top spot for total births among Indiana facilities for 11 consecutive years. Both Community Hospital North and Community Hospital East hold Level III perinatal designations, indicating the highest level of care for high‑risk mothers and infants.

Future Expansion of Neonatal Services

Community Health Network, the parent organization, plans to expand regional neonatal care with the upcoming opening of Community Hospital Westfield in 2027. The new facility will feature a Level III NICU, further increasing access to advanced infant care across central Indiana.

Continuing Commitment to Families

Maddie Lenig, Nursing Director of the Neonatal ICU, said, “No family plans for a NICU stay, but our team is committed to providing compassionate, expert care while supporting parents every step of the way.” The annual reunion serves as a tangible reminder of that commitment, allowing families to celebrate the blessings of health and the enduring bonds formed during their most challenging moments.

The event underscores the vital role that local hospitals play in supporting families, fostering community, and honoring the resilience of Indiana’s youngest citizens.
