Just after midnight on Friday, August 14, Llynda Schulze was awakened by a neighbor’s urgent phone call. A car had crashed into a vehicle parked in her driveway on the corner of Morningside Drive and Rosemont Drive in El Paso County, Colorado.
What happened
Security‑camera footage captured a vehicle ignoring a stop sign, barreling through the intersection and striking Schulze’s car as well as a neighbor’s car. After the impact, a person exited the vehicle and ran away on foot. The driver’s identity remains unknown.
Schulze, who has lived in the home for nearly 14 years, said the incident was a nightmare she had long feared. “I always had this fear, and I hope it would never happen because we all have those fears, don’t we?” she told KRDO13. The crash caused several thousand dollars in damage to her yard, her car and a large snow‑ball bush.
Police response
Colorado State Patrol (CSP) reported that a trooper had attempted to stop a suspected stolen vehicle earlier that night. The trooper was following the suspect when the vehicle ran the stop sign and entered the Schulze driveway. The license plate on the vehicle was reported stolen and did not match the suspect car, adding to the confusion.
After the collision, the driver fled on foot. CSP has not made any arrests related to the incident, and the investigation remains active as officers work to identify the driver and locate the stolen vehicle.
Community impact
Schulze’s family had taken extra precautions on the dark, unlit street by installing private street lights to improve visibility for drivers. Unfortunately, the lights did not prevent the crash. The incident underscores the challenges of traffic safety on rural or semi‑rural roads where lighting and signage may be limited.
Neighbors expressed concern for safety and urged local officials to consider additional traffic‑control measures at the intersection. While no official request for engineering changes has been filed, the community hopes the incident will prompt a review of stop‑sign compliance and possible improvements.
What’s next
CSP continues to gather evidence, including the security‑camera video and any witness statements. Residents are asked to contact the patrol with any information that could help locate the driver or the stolen vehicle.
Anyone with tips can call Colorado State Patrol’s tip line at 303‑555‑0123 or submit information online through the CSP website.
The investigation is ongoing, and updates will be provided as new details emerge.
