Sun, Sand, and the Skyline at Your Back: A Day at North Avenue Beach

There is a moment, usually sometime in late June, when you walk over the pedestrian bridge that spans Lake Shore Drive and the city suddenly falls away behind you. The traffic noise softens. The air smells faintly of sunscreen and lake water. And then you crest the path and there it is — a half-mile crescent of sand, Lake Michigan stretching out in front of you like a small inland sea, and the Chicago skyline standing at attention just over your shoulder. That moment never gets old, and it is precisely why North Avenue Beach, tucked into the northern edge of Lincoln Park, is the kind of place that stops visitors dead in their tracks and makes Chicagoans quietly grateful every single summer.

The beach sits at the foot of North Avenue, roughly at the border between the Old Town and Lincoln Park neighborhoods, and it is accessible by foot, bike, or a short ride on the 151 or 156 bus lines. If you are coming from out of town, the nearby Fullerton Red Line stop puts you about a fifteen-minute walk away — an easy stroll through one of the most beautiful stretches of urban parkland in the country. The Lakefront Trail runs right along the water here, so cyclists and joggers weave past beach chairs in an easy, unhurried rhythm that somehow never feels chaotic.

What sets North Avenue Beach apart from your average city beach is the sheer range of things happening at once. Volleyball nets fill up on weekend mornings — serious players and enthusiastic amateurs alike — while kayakers and paddleboarders launch from the water’s edge nearby. The Chicago Park District operates a seasonal boat and equipment rental operation right on the sand, which means you do not need to haul anything down here to get out on the water. Just show up.

The landmark on the beach is the Steamship Building, a 1939 Art Deco boathouse that looks exactly like an ocean liner run aground on the shore. Today it houses a concession stand, restrooms, and in warmer months, a rooftop bar that is genuinely one of the better spots in the city to watch the sun dip behind the Hancock Tower with a cold drink in your hand. It is not a pretentious scene — it is just good.

Families stake out spots early with coolers and umbrellas. Young professionals show up after work for a swim before dinner. Older couples walk the shoreline in the early evening when the light turns amber and the lake goes quiet. North Avenue Beach manages to belong to all of them at once, and that easy inclusivity is part of what makes it feel so distinctly Chicago.

Lifeguards are on duty throughout the summer season, typically from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, which gives parents real peace of mind. The water in July and August is genuinely swimmable — usually hovering in the low-to-mid seventies — though Lake Michigan has its moody days, and you should always respect the flag warning system posted at the water’s edge.

Pack a sandwich, rent a kayak, play a pickup volleyball game you will lose cheerfully, and then climb to that rooftop bar as the afternoon fades. Chicago has no shortage of great things to do, but very few of them cost almost nothing and deliver this much.
