Colleges See Surge in AI Interest

As the artificial intelligence (AI) boom continues, colleges across the country are seeing a surge in interest from students who want to learn about AI, regardless of their major. Many professors are finding themselves busier than ever teaching students from a range of majors about AI. Colleges like Virginia Commonwealth University are standing up AI minors targeting students outside computer science.

Democratizing AI Education

Professors believe that everybody needs a degree of AI literacy, just like math, reading, and writing. To achieve this, colleges are offering introductory courses on AI essentials for non-computer science majors. For instance, the University of Texas at Austin has developed a course on AI essentials for non-computer science majors.

Schools are also adding AI-focused undergraduate and graduate degrees. Some colleges, like Northwestern University, are streamlining prerequisites to make it easier for non-majors to take an AI or machine learning class. Additionally, community colleges are offering non-credit classes and AI certificates to cater to the growing demand.

Preparing Students for the Future

Professors are trying to prepare students for widely differing goals for using AI in their careers. Some students, like music composition majors, are exploring AI to help them answer philosophical questions. Others, like aspiring neurologists, are interested in AI because it is trying to emulate the brain.

The goal is to create people who can work at the intersection of art and technology. As AI continues to evolve, colleges are adapting to provide students with the skills they need to succeed in an AI-driven world.
