College Station is exploring ways to improve the Northgate district, including a proposed parking garage and increased safety measures. The city’s Chief Development Officer, Michael Ostrowski, and Director of Planning and Development, Anthony Armstrong, presented the plans, which include a parking garage with new parking signage and hardscape, the addition of benches, a statue depicting Lyle Lovett and Robert Earl Keen, a promenade area, sanitation improvements, resurfacing, and a new marketing strategy.
Public Safety Concerns
Among the biggest concerns before the additions and improvements take place is the public safety of students and residents. Council members and residents spoke publicly about their concerns, including representatives from Northgate bars. Justin Manning, a co-owner of Rough Draught Whiskey Bar, expressed appreciation for the council’s efforts to develop a strong plan, but cautioned against overregulation.
Costa Dallis, owner of the local Burger Mojo restaurant, highlighted the impact of increased student enrollment at Texas A&M University and the growing population on the Northgate area. He also raised concerns about the use of ridesharing services and the potential economic and safety challenges for businesses.
Next Steps
The council did not take any action on the proposal. Revisions and more presentations of the plans will be presented at future city council meetings. Mayor John Nichols expressed optimism about the potential for pedestrian zones to keep residents safe, despite the significant funding required to make the improvements possible.
