College Park mayor faces online sexual slur, raising concerns over civil discourse

College Park, Md. – A controversial Facebook page that frequently attacks city officials posted a demeaning comment calling Mayor Bianca Motley Broom a “whore.” The page, run by Demetris Taylor, includes a user named Webster Wallace who made the remark on Sept. 13.

Criticism vs. degradation

Mayor Motley Broom, an elected official, is subject to scrutiny of her policies and decisions. However, local observers argue that personal attacks cross a line that should not be tolerated, especially when directed at a Black woman in leadership.

Reporter Adrianne Murchison, who has covered College Park since 2023, notes that the city’s political climate has become increasingly hostile. Earlier disputes involved discrimination lawsuits and friction between the mayor and council members Roderick Gay, Joe Carn, Jamelle McKenzie, and Tracie Arnold.

Council response and community reaction

In January 2024, council members voted to limit the mayor’s influence over agenda items, reflecting ongoing tensions. Recent allegations link Councilwoman Jamelle McKenzie to the anonymous poster, though McKenzie denies any connection.

Residents and community leaders stress the importance of holding public officials accountable without resorting to humiliating language. They argue that tolerating such degradation normalizes disrespect and could lead to more dangerous rhetoric.

Why it matters

Beyond the immediate insult, the incident highlights broader concerns about how women—particularly Black women—are treated in the public arena. Murchison emphasizes that criticism of policies is essential, but it must not replace respectful discourse with personal humiliation.

The episode serves as a reminder that civil dialogue is vital for a healthy democracy, and that community standards should protect the dignity of all elected officials.
