Coast Guard Training Center Opens at Birmingham-Southern College

The Birmingham-Southern College campus has found a new purpose as the U.S. Coast Guard officially opened its Training Center Birmingham-Southern. This transition was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, symbolizing a fresh start for the historic site.

Daniel Coleman, the college’s former president, likened the event to a wedding, expressing hope and optimism for the future of the campus. He emphasized the legacy of the college, which will be preserved alongside the Coast Guard’s mission.

Adm. Kevin Lunday, commandant of the Coast Guard, assured attendees that the heritage of Birmingham-Southern College would remain visible throughout the campus. The emblem of the training center combines the Coast Guard’s anchor with the college’s panther mascot, serving as a reminder of the site’s rich history.

Senator Katie Britt, instrumental in the project’s realization, highlighted the transformation as a pivotal moment for Birmingham. As chair of the Homeland Security Appropriations subcommittee, she played a key role in facilitating the collaboration between local, state, and federal leaders.

Senator Tommy Tuberville praised the initiative as a rebirth for the campus, noting the change in curriculum and the development of future leaders. He credited former President Donald Trump for his negotiation skills, which secured the property at a favorable price, saving the country significant funds.

Adm. Lunday described the facilities as world-class, ready to host initial training classes within months. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin acknowledged the need for some renovations to meet the Coast Guard’s standards but emphasized the investment’s value to Birmingham.

The transformation of the Birmingham-Southern College campus into a Coast Guard training center represents a significant investment in the community, promising to bring new life and purpose to the historic site.
