Coast Guard Recovers Four Miami Family Members After Plane Crash Near Bahamas

The U.S. Coast Guard announced today that it has recovered the bodies of four members of a Miami family following a tragic plane crash off the coast of the Bahamas. The aircraft, a PA-34-200T Piper five‑seater, went down just before 2:30 p.m. on September 7, approximately 15 miles east of Andros Island.

Victims identified

The victims have been identified as Mario Lamar Sr., 80, and his wife Lili Lamar, 79, along with their grandchildren Sofi Sosa, 28, and Christian Sosa, 22. The family was traveling from the Bahamas back to the Miami Executive Airport in Opa‑Locka when the incident occurred.

Coast Guard response

Coast Guard officials said the aircraft’s pilot, Mario Lamar Sr., had more than 40 years of flying experience. “It is with profound sadness that we confirm all four of our family members have been found deceased,” the agency said in a statement released to the media.

Cause of crash still under investigation

At this time, the exact cause of the crash remains unknown. The Coast Guard is conducting a thorough investigation in coordination with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Bahamian authorities. No foul play has been suggested, and investigators are focusing on possible mechanical failure, weather conditions, or other factors that could have contributed to the accident.

Impact on the community

The loss has sent shockwaves through the Miami community, where the Lamar family was known for its close‑knit ties and active involvement in local church and charitable activities. Neighbors and friends have expressed their condolences, emphasizing the family’s dedication to faith, family, and service.

Safety reminders

While the investigation proceeds, the Coast Guard reminds private pilots and passengers to ensure aircraft are properly maintained and to stay informed about weather conditions, especially when flying over open water. The agency also encourages families to consider travel insurance and to keep emergency contact information up to date.

Next steps

Authorities will continue to work with the NTSB to release a final report once the investigation is complete. In the meantime, the Coast Guard will provide support to the family’s extended relatives and coordinate with local faith leaders to offer counseling and spiritual care.

For updates on this developing story, readers are encouraged to follow local news outlets and the Coast Guard’s official channels.
