Coach Randy Loyd was recently inducted into the Arkansas High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Loyd coached high school basketball at Charleston, Johnson County West Side, County Line, and Van Buren.

Legacy of Coaching

Loyd spent the majority of his time at Van Buren, where he was the boys head coach for 22 years and the athletic director for 15 of those years. He was surrounded by friends and family during the Hall of Fame ceremony.

"It was an awesome day," he said. "I mean, you know, to be inducted into the Arkansas High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame is something that you really don't expect to happen."

Loyd's grandkids broke the news to him about his induction. At a family dinner, they brought him a box that he opened to find a cake saying "2026 Arkansas High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame."

Loyd says the relationships he made with his players and other local coaches is what kept him around the game for so long. He hopes the legacy he leaves behind is the culture of his teams.

"We won a lot of games there at Van Buren, but just to be remembered that our teams played hard and did things the right way," Loyd said.

Basketball runs in the Loyd family blood. His son is currently the boys head coach at Bentonville West. Loyd says he gets more nervous watching him coach than he ever did while he was on the sidelines.
