Close to home. Always in the loop.

Climb, Scramble, and Catch Your Breath at the Top of Mount Sentinel

There is a moment about two-thirds of the way up Mount Sentinel when you stop pretending you are just out for a casual stroll. Your lungs are working, your calves are reminding you that you skipped leg day, and the switchbacks ahead show no mercy. Then you turn around — and Missoula is laid out below you like something from a painting. The Clark Fork bends silver through the valley, the downtown grid is tiny and perfect, and the mountains roll out in every direction like a rumpled green quilt. That moment alone is worth every step.

The M Trail is one of Missoula’s most beloved and democratic institutions. It begins right at the edge of the University of Montana campus, off Arthur Avenue on the east side of town, making it absurdly easy to access whether you are a student, a visitor staying downtown, or a local who has been meaning to do it for years. There is a small parking area at the trailhead, but on a warm afternoon you can just as easily walk over from the riverfront in ten minutes.

The trail climbs approximately 620 feet over roughly a mile and a half of switchbacks to reach the famous white concrete letter M — a landmark visible from almost anywhere in the city. The M itself was first installed in 1908 by UM freshmen hauling rocks up the hillside, a tradition that continued for decades. Standing next to it, you realize just how massive the structure actually is. From the valley floor it looks tidy and modest; up close, it is the size of a small building.

Most hikers turn around at the M, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. The views are tremendous and the round trip takes about 45 minutes to an hour at a comfortable pace. But if your legs have more to give, the trail continues up to the summit of Mount Sentinel at 5,158 feet. The terrain opens up, the vegetation thins, and on a clear day you can see ranges stretching deep into the Bob Marshall Wilderness. The full summit hike is around five miles round trip and gains close to 1,900 feet — a genuine workout that rewards you with a perspective very few visitors ever experience.

What makes this trail special beyond the views is the way it belongs to everyone. You will share the path with university professors on their lunch break, families with small children stopping every few minutes to look at a grasshopper, trail runners who make it look effortless, and first-time hikers taking it slow and savoring every pause. Dogs are welcome on leash, and the trailhead has water and restrooms nearby.

Go early on summer mornings when the light is golden and the air is still cool. Go at sunset when the valley glows amber and the city lights begin to flicker on below you. Go when you need to remember why people fall so completely in love with this part of Montana. The M Trail does not ask for much, and it gives back more than you expect every single time.
