Sunrise Biscuits, Sweet Tea, and a Table With a View: Morning at Perrone’s at the Marina

There is a particular kind of morning that only happens near the water. The light comes in low and gold, the air smells faintly of salt and diesel, and somewhere nearby a pelican is conducting its own breakfast business with far more confidence than you have before your first cup of coffee. I found exactly that kind of morning at Perrone’s at the Marina, tucked into the Little River waterfront just north of the main Myrtle Beach strip, and I have been thinking about it ever since.

Little River is one of those neighborhoods that locals guard with quiet pride. It sits at the northern edge of Horry County, where the Intracoastal Waterway widens and the working shrimp boats still come and go like they have for generations. The streets are unhurried. The live oaks are enormous. And Perrone’s fits right into that rhythm — a casual, welcoming waterfront spot that manages to feel like a neighborhood institution even if you have never set foot in it before.

The restaurant occupies a comfortable perch right on the marina, and the outdoor deck is the place to be. Request a table along the railing if you can, because the view across the water is genuinely lovely — moored boats rocking gently, the far bank green and wild, the occasional osprey making a dramatic pass overhead. It is the kind of scenery that makes you order a second round of sweet tea just to have an excuse to keep sitting there.

The menu leans hard into Lowcountry staples, and that is exactly the right call. The she-crab soup is rich and deeply savory, finished with a splash of sherry that makes you feel like you are doing something slightly luxurious on a Tuesday. The shrimp and grits arrive in a cast-iron skillet, the grits creamy and stone-ground, the shrimp plump and pink and tossed with andouille and a tomato-based sauce that has just enough heat to keep things interesting. Portions are generous in that unapologetic Southern way that makes you glad you skipped the big hotel breakfast.

For a lighter appetite, the fish tacos hit every note — fresh local catch, crisp slaw, a chipotle crema that ties it all together without overwhelming the fish. And the hush puppies that arrive at the table as a starter are, frankly, dangerous. Crispy outside, soft and slightly sweet inside, served with a honey butter that you will be thinking about on the drive home.

Service is the warm, familiar kind that makes you feel like a regular by the time your entrée arrives. Nobody is rushing you anywhere. The pace of the place mirrors the pace of the waterway outside — easy, steady, unhurried.

Little River is about a twenty-minute drive from the heart of Myrtle Beach, and that short distance is absolutely worth making. This is the kind of meal that resets your expectations for a beach vacation — away from the neon and the crowds, right at the edge of something genuinely beautiful. Go hungry, go early enough to grab that railing table, and stay as long as they will let you.
