Cleveland Pools Open for Summer: Safety and Staffing Updates

As summer approaches, Cleveland residents can look forward to the opening of the city’s pools and splash pads this weekend. The Cleveland City Council’s recent Municipal Services & Properties Committee meeting provided insights into the operational plans for these facilities.

Pool Operations and Safety Measures

Outdoor pools will open on Saturday, June 6, and will be available to the public seven days a week from noon to 7 p.m. This change addresses previous safety concerns when residents used the pools without lifeguards on duty. Indoor pools will operate two to three days a week, depending on staffing availability.

Director of Parks and Recreation Alexandria Nichols highlighted that 80 lifeguards have been trained and are ready for the summer season, an increase from last year’s 68. Each pool will have three active lifeguards on site, although the city ideally needs 160 lifeguards for full capacity. Recruitment for lifeguards continues, with a starting pay of over $17.50 an hour. While summer applications are closed, fall and winter training registrations are open.

Visitor Guidelines and Amenities

Visitors must sign in before entering the pool area, whether they plan to swim or not. Sessions last 45 minutes, followed by a 15-minute rest period, and pools will no longer close from 4 to 5 p.m. due to improved staffing.

There are no concession stands at the pools, so visitors are encouraged to bring water in non-glass containers. While outside food is permitted, officials request that food deliveries to the pool be avoided. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult or caretaker over 16.

For those who love Cleveland, the city offers numerous activities and events to explore throughout the summer.
