Cleveland Mayor Talks Long-Term Legacy

Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb took a long-term view of the city’s legacy at the Rockefeller Foundation’s Big Bets for America summit. He recalled a conversation about the longevity of cities, noting that cities have outlived nations throughout history.

Cleveland’s Industrial Cleanup Efforts

The summit served as a pep rally for the city’s effort to clear abandoned industrial land and welcome new employers. The cleanup effort, known as the Site Readiness for Good Jobs Fund, received a $10 million gift from the family of Samuel T. Wellman and $2 million from the KeyBank Foundation.

Out of the 350 acres of land assembled so far, 88 acres are shovel-ready. The goal is to reach a total of 150 acres in the next year. A spokesperson for the fund said that announcements about the first development deals are expected in the coming months.

Local Politics and Development

Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne is running unopposed for a second term. However, he faces opposition from Prosecutor Michael O’Malley over a proposed charter amendment that would clarify the county’s legal representation.

Ronayne defended his proposal, saying it would provide clarity on the county’s legal roles. O’Malley criticized the idea, calling it a ‘power grab’ that could destroy county government.
