Challengers vying for three Clay County School Board seats attended a forum to make their case to voters. The League of Women Voters hosted the event ahead of the August primary, where School Board elections for Districts 1, 4, and 5 will appear on the ballot.
Challengers’ Platforms
District 1 challenger Lara Libretto, a former school leader and teacher, emphasized the need to support teachers, continue student achievement, and engage parents. Libretto pointed to administrative spending as a place to find savings, stating that the district needs to look at the top administrative level for potential cuts.
District 4 challenger Michael Rathjen, a parent of three daughters and a business professional, entered the race due to concerns about school funding. Rathjen proposed a longer-term financial strategy and made a personal pledge to voters, committing to not accept a pay raise if elected to the School Board.
Two of the three District 5 challengers, Veronica Powell-Faison and Gerald Beasley, also attended the forum. Powell-Faison said she is running to advocate for students, families, and educators, while Beasley argued that the district needs change from within.
