Ciscomani and Mendoza Campaign Hard for Arizona’s Competitive 6th District

Southern Arizona voters headed to the polls Tuesday in the closely watched 6th Congressional District, a seat that national forecasters label among the nation’s most competitive. The district spans parts of Pima, Pinal, Cochise, Graham and Greenlee counties and includes eastern Tucson and surrounding communities.

Incumbent’s Final Push

Republican Rep. Juan Ciscomani, seeking a third term, spent the day visiting polling sites across the district. He cast his ballot in Marana alongside his parents, wife and other relatives, then addressed reporters outside the polls. “At the end of the day, what you want from a government elected official is to have results,” Ciscomani said. “For four years I have been demonstrating and bringing in results, the role in the Appropriations Committee, these are things that add up and that actually make a difference for our community.” He highlighted his work on the Appropriations Committee and noted that his record aligns with the policies of the current administration, which he said has helped strengthen the local economy.

Democratic Challenger’s Message

Democratic challenger JoAnna Mendoza, voting early by mail in her hometown of Eloy, traveled to the Tucson metro area to campaign with Senator Mark Kelly. She told Arizona Luminaria that voters need representatives who “actually care about the people in their district,” protect the Constitution and will “put a check on this administration.” Mendoza, a first‑time candidate, described the campaign as an unprecedented experience, likening it to a deployment overseas.

Voter Perspectives

Local voters expressed clear preferences. Susan Shoemaker of Oro Valley, a registered Republican, said she voted for Ciscomani to oppose Democrats she feels are moving too far left. “I’ve met him before, I like what he stands for,” she said. Michael Prochnau of Tucson cited the current administration’s handling of the economy, the conflict in Iran and concerns about corruption as reasons for his down‑ballot vote for Ciscomani, while acknowledging Mendoza’s stance on taxation and immigration.

Race History and Outlook

The district’s electorate is roughly evenly split among Republicans, Democrats and independent voters, making every election a tight contest. In 2022, Ciscomani defeated Democrat Kirsten Engel by just over 5,200 votes; in the 2024 rematch he won by under 11,000 votes. Both candidates acknowledged that the final count may not be known on Tuesday night, recalling that the 2022 race required six days to call and the 2024 race took eight days.

What’s Next

As the night progresses, election officials will continue to tally votes from precincts across the district. The outcome will determine whether the Trump administration’s economic agenda retains a supportive voice in the House or whether a new Democratic perspective will emerge from Mendoza’s campaign.
