Chula Vista School Board Candidate Resigns After Resume Discrepancy Over ICE Work

Chula Vista – School board hopeful Jessica Tolston announced she is resigning from her position with the Department of Homeland Security after a discrepancy in her campaign résumé was uncovered. Voice of San Diego obtained a copy of Tolston’s full federal résumé that listed her role working on computer systems used by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to track, detain and deport illegal immigrants. The résumé she submitted to local Democratic party leaders, however, only described generic administrative duties at the agency’s San Diego headquarters.

Candidate’s Explanation

“The different resumes reflect different points in my career and different purposes,” Tolston told the outlet. “That was not an attempt to conceal my employment history or mislead anyone about my work.” She added that she submitted the shorter version to focus on skills she felt were most relevant to a school‑board role.

Party Leaders’ Reaction

County Democratic leaders said they did not feel deceived by Tolston’s description of her federal work. “We appreciate her honesty in coming forward and we respect her decision to resign from federal service,” a spokesperson said. “If anything, we admire her for choosing to step away rather than continue under a cloud of controversy.”

Impact on the Race

Tolston’s withdrawal removes a candidate from the upcoming Chula Vista school‑board election, leaving the remaining field unchanged. Voters who were considering her platform will now need to evaluate the other contenders based on their own records and policy positions.

Broader Context

The incident highlights the heightened scrutiny candidates face regarding ties to federal immigration enforcement. While Tolston’s work involved technical support for ICE systems, the controversy underscores the importance of transparency for candidates seeking public trust, especially in a community that values parental involvement and local control of schools.

What’s Next for the Board

The Chula Vista school board will continue its regular business, including upcoming budget discussions and curriculum reviews. The board’s focus remains on improving educational outcomes for the city’s children, a goal shared by many local families and faith‑based groups.

Community Response

Local parents and community leaders have expressed mixed reactions. Some praised Tolston’s decision to step down, viewing it as an act of accountability. Others urged voters to keep the larger issues—such as school safety, curriculum choices, and support for families—at the forefront of the election.

Looking Ahead

With the filing deadline for school‑board candidates already passed, the race will proceed without a replacement nominee for Tolston. Voters are encouraged to attend upcoming candidate forums and review the remaining candidates’ positions on education, parental rights, and community values.
