Chez Vachon Closed Its Doors, But the Franco-American Centre Keeps Manchester’s French-Canadian Soul Alive

Manchester has a secret ingredient baked into its DNA — and if you’ve ever wandered through the Petite Canada neighborhood on the West Side and noticed the street names, the triple-decker houses, or the faded storefront signs still bearing French lettering, you’ve already caught a glimpse of it. The Franco-American Centre, tucked inside a handsome building at 100 Saint Anselm Drive on the campus of Saint Anselm College, is where that living history gets its proper stage.

I’ll admit I didn’t know quite what to expect on my first visit. I walked in thinking I’d spend twenty minutes being politely respectful and then head off to find coffee. I walked out two hours later with a head full of stories and a genuine urge to call my grandmother and ask her about her own family’s roots. That’s the kind of place this is — modest in footprint, enormous in feeling.

The Centre serves as both a cultural organization and a gathering point for everything related to Franco-American heritage in New England, with a particular focus on Manchester’s extraordinary French-Canadian immigrant history. At its peak in the early twentieth century, Manchester was home to one of the largest French-Canadian populations in the United States, drawn here by the thundering looms of the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company. Entire families relocated from Quebec, built tight-knit parishes, ran their own schools and newspapers in French, and essentially created a city within a city. The Franco-American Centre is the keeper of that flame.

The exhibits are thoughtful and approachable — you don’t need to be a history scholar or have any French-Canadian ancestry to find them compelling. Photographs, documents, artifacts, and personal testimonies tell the story of migration, community-building, faith, and resilience with warmth rather than academia. There’s something genuinely moving about seeing the faces of mill workers staring back at you from century-old photographs, knowing they walked the same streets you drove down to get here.

Beyond the exhibits, the Centre runs a robust calendar of cultural events throughout the year: film screenings, genealogy workshops (hugely popular among descendants trying to trace their Quebec roots), language preservation programs, concerts featuring traditional Quebec and Acadian music, and community dinners that bring together folks who still speak joual at home and newcomers discovering this heritage for the first time alike. Check their events page before you visit — chances are something is happening that weekend worth staying for.

The staff and volunteers here carry an infectious pride in what they’re preserving, and they’re genuinely happy to talk with curious visitors. Ask about the genealogy resources if you have any New England French-Canadian roots — the Centre maintains an impressive archive that has helped thousands of families reconnect with relatives and stories they thought were lost.

Saint Anselm’s campus itself is lovely, particularly in the warmer months, so budget time for a walk after your visit. But don’t rush through the Centre itself. This is one of those places where slowing down is the whole point — where a city’s complicated, beautiful, working-class immigrant story gets told with the dignity it deserves. Manchester wouldn’t be Manchester without it.
