Cheshire town officials have banned e-bikes, e-scooters, and other motor-assisted rideable vehicles at Bartlem Park due to safety concerns, complaints, and damage to park property.
Safety Concerns
New signs have been posted throughout the popular park to notify visitors of the ban, which applies to rideable vehicles equipped with a helper motor. Many park visitors have expressed mixed opinions on the ban, with some supporting the town’s decision and others arguing it goes too far.
Some park-goers, like Sophia Chagnon of North Haven, have expressed concerns about the speed of e-bikes, stating that they can’t stop quickly if needed. Others, like Kim Shaw of Cheshire, think that if everyone followed safety rules, e-bikes could be allowed in the park.
The Cheshire Parks & Recreation Department has reported an increase in complaints about e-bikes over the past several months, as well as damage to the park’s new bandshell area. The parks and recreation director stated that the ban is the most appropriate way to protect the park, preserve the bandshell, and maintain a safe and peaceful environment for everyone who visits.
There is an exception to the ban for people with mobility challenges. Those caught violating the ban could face a fine or a juvenile summons, depending on their age.
