Chatham County Commissioner Aaron Whitely Named to Three NACo Leadership Posts

Chatham County District 6 Commissioner Aaron “Adot” Whitely received three new leadership assignments from the National Association of Counties (NACo) at the organization’s annual conference in New Orleans. NACo President George Dunlap named Whitely vice chair of the Community, Economic and Workforce Development Policy Steering Committee, vice chair of the International Economic Development Innovation Council, and chairman of the Veterans and Military Services Advisory Council. In addition, Whitely was appointed second vice chairman of the National Democratic County Officials (NDCO).

What the appointments mean for Chatham County

Whitely’s new roles place a Chatham County voice at the forefront of several national policy discussions that affect county governments across the United States. The Community, Economic and Workforce Development Policy Steering Committee reviews issues such as affordable housing, community revitalization, and workforce training. By serving as vice chair, Whitely can help shape recommendations that may influence federal legislation and grant programs that benefit local Georgia communities.

The International Economic Development Innovation Council focuses on how counties engage in the global economy. As vice chair, Whitely will work with federal partners and economic experts to promote trade, investment, and innovation opportunities that could attract new businesses to the Savannah region.

Veterans and military families in focus

As chairman of the Veterans and Military Services Advisory Council, Whitely will lead efforts to identify best practices for county‑level programs that support service members, veterans, and their families. The council’s work includes highlighting successful initiatives, advocating for resources, and ensuring that county officials have the tools needed to serve those who have defended the nation.

Broader implications for county governance

NACo’s policy steering committees meet at least twice a year to develop recommendations that form the basis of the American County Platform, the organization’s primary advocacy vehicle in Washington. Whitely’s participation in three of these committees gives Chatham County a direct line to the policy‑making process that shapes federal priorities affecting local governments.

Whitely’s appointment as second vice chairman of the National Democratic County Officials also underscores his standing among peers in the Democratic‑leaning county‑official community. While the NDCO is a partisan association, its work centers on sharing best practices and promoting effective county governance.

Community response

Local leaders and residents have expressed optimism that Whitely’s elevated profile will bring additional attention and resources to Chatham County. “Having one of our own in these national leadership positions is a testament to the hard work of our commissioners and the strength of our community,” said a senior staff member at the Chatham County Board of Commissioners.

Whitely’s appointments come at a time when counties nationwide are navigating post‑pandemic recovery, infrastructure needs, and workforce development challenges. His involvement in NACo’s policy work positions Chatham County to benefit from emerging solutions and federal support.

About NACo and NDCO

The National Association of Counties represents more than 3,000 county governments across the United States. Through its committees, initiatives, and advocacy, NACo provides counties with tools, research, and a collective voice in federal policy debates. The National Democratic County Officials is a partisan organization that connects Democratic‑affiliated county officials to share ideas and coordinate on policy priorities.

Whitely’s new responsibilities will require regular travel to NACo meetings, collaboration with fellow county leaders, and ongoing communication with Chatham County constituents to ensure that national policy discussions remain grounded in local realities.
