A historic mansion in the Monte Vista neighborhood is now home to Great Hearts at the Koehler House, a public charter school. The school, which opened in 2014, has leased the property from developer Weston Urban.
Restoration and Lease
The Koehler House, built in the early 20th century, was restored by Weston Urban after being acquired for $2.3 million from San Antonio College in 2023. The restoration was overseen by San Antonio-based architecture firm Ford Powell Carson.
The school will use the entire property, including the house and grounds, under a 10-year lease. The first floor of the house is being transformed into a library and art classrooms, while the lower level will be used for music classrooms.
Community Involvement
The school’s executive team is now located on the upper floor of the house. An anonymous donor contributed funding for a new fenced sport court, which features the words “truth, beauty and goodness” painted on the surface. The playground has been named in memory of 8-year-old Kellyanne Lytal, who died last year.
Great Hearts at the Koehler House has reached an enrollment of 572 students in grades K-5th for the upcoming school year, which starts August 11. The school’s classical education approach will be supported by the new facilities.
