Charter plane crashes near Cape Newenham radar site in Alaska, 8 killed

A tragic aviation accident unfolded in western Alaska on Thursday when a chartered Cessna 441, operated by Security Aviation, went down near the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site. The flight, which left Anchorage bound for the remote Air Force airstrip, crashed around 12:15 p.m., killing all eight people on board.

Flight details and victims

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the aircraft departed Anchorage with two pilots and six passengers. The National Transportation Safety Board’s Alaska region chief, Clint Johnson, identified the passengers as a mix of civilian contractors and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) employees. The USACE later confirmed that two of its staff were among the dead.

Security Aviation, a long‑standing provider of charter services throughout Alaska, described its fleet of Cessna Conquest aircraft as “ideally suited for flights in Alaska with challenging weather and airport environments.” The twin‑engine, turbo‑prop plane is pressurized, seats up to nine passengers, and can cruise at 330 mph at 28,000 feet.

Location and terrain challenges

The crash site was the Cape Newenham Airport, an Air Force airstrip that serves the Long Range Radar Site perched on a mountain more than 2,300 feet high. FAA maps show a gravel runway just under 4,000 feet long, flanked by steep terrain on both sides and a high‑elevation drop at the south end. Such geography can make an aborted landing “improbable” after a certain point, according to the FAA.

Official response

U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Robert Davis called the loss “devastating” for the military family and the communities they serve. He emphasized that the individuals were “dedicated professionals carrying out a vital mission in a demanding environment.” The Alaskan Command and the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center deployed search‑and‑rescue crews, who later confirmed there were no survivors.

Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska expressed condolences on the social platform X, noting her extensive travel with Security Aviation and her appreciation for the Coast Guard, NTSB, Alaska State Troopers, and rescue teams. “Alaska is praying for those on board, their loved ones, and the team at Security Aviation,” she wrote.

Investigation underway

The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation, with the FAA providing support. The cause of the crash remains unknown pending a full review of flight data, weather conditions, and the challenging terrain surrounding the runway.

Names of the victims will be released after next of kin have been notified, as is standard procedure.

Impact on the community

Alaska’s remote communities rely heavily on charter flights for essential transport of personnel, supplies, and medical services. The loss of eight skilled professionals underscores the risks inherent in operating in the state’s rugged environment. Local families, colleagues, and the broader military community are mourning the sudden loss while awaiting answers from the investigation.

Security Aviation has pledged to cooperate fully with investigators and to support the families of the deceased. The company’s statement highlighted its commitment to safety and its long history of serving Alaskan communities under demanding conditions.
