Charles County health officials report rabies in bat and skunk after beaver incidents

The Charles County Health Department confirmed that a bat found in Waldorf and a skunk discovered in Port Tobacco have both tested positive for rabies. The findings come on the heels of three recent beaver attacks at Maryland state parks, two of which involved rabid beavers at Cunningham Falls State Park and a presumed rabid beaver at Seneca Creek State Park.

Recent wildlife rabies cases in the county

County officials said the bat and skunk were tested on Friday and returned positive results for the virus. Both animals were unknown to the public and were handled by animal control before testing. The department is urging residents to avoid contact with unfamiliar wildlife, to keep pets confined, and to report any suspicious animal behavior to local authorities.

Background on the beaver attacks

Within the past month, three separate incidents involving beavers have been reported at state parks. Two beavers that bit visitors at Cunningham Falls State Park were later confirmed to carry rabies. A third beaver that attacked a park visitor at Seneca Creek State Park could not be recovered, but officials presume it was rabid based on the circumstances of the bite.

Free rabies vaccination clinics for pets

To help protect pets and reduce the risk of further transmission, the health department, in partnership with Charles County Animal Control, will host two free drive‑through rabies vaccination clinics. The events are scheduled for October 18 and November 15 in La Plata, operating from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dogs, cats and ferrets are eligible for vaccination. Residents can call 301‑609‑3425 or 301‑609‑6751 for additional information.

What residents should do

  • Do not approach or handle wild animals, even if they appear injured or sick.
  • Keep pets up to date on rabies vaccinations; use the free clinics if needed.
  • Report any animal bites or suspicious wildlife to the Charles County Health Department or Animal Control.
  • Seek medical attention promptly if bitten or scratched by a wild animal.

The department emphasized that rabies is a fatal disease if left untreated, but it is preventable through timely vaccination and proper handling of wildlife encounters. By staying vigilant and utilizing the upcoming vaccination clinics, residents can help safeguard both human and animal health in Charles County.
