Chargers place starting center Tyler Biadasz on season‑ending IR after ACL tear

Los Angeles – The Los Angeles Chargers confirmed Sunday that starting center Tyler Biadasz has been placed on season‑ending injured reserve following a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) sustained during a joint practice with the San Francisco 49ers last week.

Injury details

Biadasz, 28, was carted off the field after Chargers guard Kayode Awosika threw 49ers defensive lineman Sebastian Valdez to the ground during an 11‑on‑11 drill. Valdez landed on the back of Biadasz’s legs, causing the immediate collapse and subsequent ACL injury.

Biadasz’s background

The 2026 season would have been Biadasz’s first with the Chargers after signing a three‑year, $30 million contract following his release from the Washington Commanders. He entered the league as a fourth‑round pick of the Dallas Cowboys, spent four seasons in Dallas, two with Washington, and earned a Pro Bowl selection during his third year in Dallas. The Chargers expected him to upgrade the interior line over veteran Bradley Bozeman, who started at center the previous two seasons.

Replacement at center

Second‑round rookie Jake Slaughter will assume the starting center duties. Slaughter, originally competing for the left guard spot, has prior experience snapping at center from his college career at Florida and took several reps at the position during training camp and preseason. The Chargers hope his familiarity with the role will ease the transition.

Impact on the offensive line

This injury marks the second consecutive season the Chargers have lost a key offensive lineman in training camp. Last year, left tackle Rashawn Slater suffered a torn patellar tendon shortly after signing a four‑year, $114 million extension. The team responded by moving right tackle Joe Alt to left tackle, but Alt was limited to six games due to multiple ankle injuries.

With Biadasz sidelined, the Chargers’ offensive line faces a significant challenge as quarterback Justin Herbert prepares for the upcoming season. The coaching staff will need to adjust protection schemes and rely on depth players to maintain continuity.

Looking ahead

Head coach and staff have not provided a timeline for Biadasz’s recovery, but an ACL tear typically requires nine to twelve months of rehabilitation. The Chargers will monitor his progress closely and consider future roster moves to bolster the interior line.

Fans can follow updates on the Chargers’ official website and social media channels as the team navigates the early‑season roster adjustments.
